Okay, what you watch here or have watched here was supposed to be a picture. However, this picture turned out to be a short movie of me and Henry (a semi-retired volunteer at JAARS) pulling a prop from the very first Helio ever built. I handed Floyd (another retired volunteer at JAARS) my camera with the video option selected. He thought he had snapped a picture. I think it was interesting that he managed to keep the camera pointed at us for the most part.
This Helio aircraft was built in 1954 and is capable of controlled flight at 35 knots. The Helio demonstration flights done here at JAARS on JAARS Day events prove this extremely slow flight characteristic that has enabled JAARS to provide safe transportation for the Wycliffe Bible Translators who live among remote people groups in order to learn and translate their language for the purpose of Bible translation. Cameron Townsend, founder of JAARS said "The greatest missionary is the Bible in the mother tongue"
Why am I taking the prop off? The prop was oozing grease out of the wrong places while I was servicing it. We had to send it to an "approved" propeller repair shop for repair. The aircraft affectionately known as "Ole No. 1" will attend Osh Kosh fly-in in Wisconsin next month (officially known as EAA's AirVenture 2009 http://www.airventure.org/index.html ). The emphasis of the fly-in this year is Humanitarian and Mission Aviation. Also Ole No. 1 is up for sale as older mission aircraft are being replaced with new, a much needed and long awaited process.
We are blessed to serve here in Waxhaw, thank you for your prayers and financial support.
A fun link to watch a flying car created for mission work that will be at the Osh Kosh fly-in:
